It should come as no surprise that we spend a lot of time in our kitchens and bathrooms. Most families prepare, eat and cleanup all three meals in their kitchens. Also, we spend an astonishing average of 813 days in our lifetime in the bathroom! Therefore, it is only fitting that we designate a month to celebrate the design of these two spaces.
October is National Kitchen and Bath Month. Take a look below at the history of kitchen and bath design and to find out how this month came about.
Post-World War II: The Appreciation for Kitchen and Bath Design Begins
After World War II, a rush of soldiers came home ready to get married, settle down and start a family. This and the manufacturing advancements that marked the time, the housing boom of post-World War II had a huge impact on the kitchen and bathrooms we have today.
For kitchens, there was an increased demand for technology and equipment. Shiny ovens with matching refrigerators, dishwashers and designed countertops made homeowners want to tear down walls and re-design their space. During this time, the kitchen became a source of pride.
As far as bathrooms go, the glamour of Hollywood movies and the emerging of the middle class made families demand certain luxuries. As with the kitchen, the bathroom was becoming a source of pride, particularly for the women in the house. With the “baby boom” in full swing, Mom and Dad now wanted bathrooms separate from their children. During this time there was a demand for beauty in the bathroom which was reflected in choice of color, pattern and tile. The bathroom became a way of escaping for parents.
The National Kitchen and Bath Association and National Kitchen and Bath Month
Due to the high-demand of kitchen and bath remodel post-World War II, the National Kitchen and Bath Association was born. Established in 1963, the National Kitchen and Bath Association became a network of kitchen dealers and has now grown into one of the premier associations for distributors, retailers, remodelers, manufacturers, fabricators, installers, designers and other professionals. Hudson Valley Kitchen Design is proud to be a member of this great organization.
Flash forward to 1982, the National Kitchen and Bath Association realized that October was a popular time of year for homeowners to remodel their kitchen and bath. With the kids back in school and the holidays not yet beginning, this is the one of the busiest month for kitchen and bath industry. Therefore, the Kitchen and Bath Association decided to set it aside and officially make October National Kitchen and Bath Month!
